Grey Owl was born Archibald Stansfeld Belaney in 1888, in Hastings, England. He died in 1938 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, as the famed North American Indian conservationist Grey Owl. On emigrating to Canada, he spent his early years as a trapper in northern Ontario and Quebec. By his mid-thirties he had become a protector of wildlife, particularly beaver, and a popular author and lecturer. An enormously successful impostor, he played the part of an Indian with a dramatic flourish. Wearing his trademark costume, he was granted an audience with King George VI, to whom he preached his message of conservation. He lived in a cabin in Prince Albert National Park that was specially constructed so his beaver could build their lodge in it.
