Our favorite authors. We read their words, we know their characters, but most every reader has wondered about the people behind the books - the faces behind the stories. Writers is a compelling collection of 73 photographs of some of the world's most gifted authors. For over twenty-five years, acclaimed photographer Sally Soames of London's Sunday Times has eloquently recorded the faces of novelists, poets, essayists, and playwrights. Using only natural light, she displays a rare skill, revealing in her subjects something of their "ability to create, influence, teach, weave magic." In capturing the light in their eyes, she captures, too, the light that illuminates their words.
To accompany their portraits, the writers pictured here have selected words - either their own or those of authors they admire - which intensify the visual image and give us a new understanding of the works that have made them so beloved.
